Sweet Support: How Sports Clubs Boost Charity Fundraising with Swizzels

Introduction
Sports clubs across the UK are helping local charities raise awareness and funds by naming them their Charity of the Year. Fun initiatives – from raffles to lucky dips – often feature Swizzels sweets as irresistible prizes. At Wigan Warriors, Wigan and Leigh Hospice raised hundreds of pounds this way, proving that sweets and sports can be a winning combination for fundraising success.

When it comes to charity fundraising ideas, sports clubs are proving to be powerful partners. By choosing a Charity of the Year, clubs not only give local charities vital visibility, they also create fun, family-friendly ways for fans to get involved in community fundraising with sports clubs.

At Wigan Warriors, for example, Wigan and Leigh Hospice have enjoyed a season of incredible support as the club’s chosen charity. This type of sports club charity partnership brings fundraising right into the heart of match-day excitement, helping charities reach new audiences while fans enjoy interactive experiences.

Chris Swinton, Events Fundraiser at Wigan and Leigh Hospice, explains:

“We have had the privilege of being Wigan Warriors Charity of the Year for this season. As part of this we have been able to have stands in the fan village before every game where we've had raffles, games and prizes to win. One of the many games was a ‘Lucky Dip’ which was very popular with younger visitors. For £1 children could pick a wrapped prize from the lucky dip, which may have been a small teddy, but what they were all looking for were the wrapped bundles of Swizzels sweets! These lucky dips have helped to raise hundreds of pounds for the hospice over the course of the season.”

This is a perfect example of how something simple – like fundraising with sweets – can capture the imagination of fans and drive donations. Swizzels sweets don’t just add excitement; they create memorable experiences, making raffle and lucky dip fundraising ideas even more appealing to families.

Across the UK, other clubs are also running sports fundraising activities such as raffles, fan village charity stands, and games designed to engage children. Affordable prizes like sweets keep fundraising fun, while ensuring that everyone feels part of supporting a good cause.

Whether it’s rugby, football, or cricket, these charity partnerships with sports clubs show the sweet side of sport – where every raffle ticket, every lucky dip, and every bundle of sweets helps raise vital funds. It’s proof that when sports teams support local charities, everyone wins.
